The MCV Sewing Project started in 2001 by Nettie Graulich has been a huge success over many years. Unfortunately the COVID 19 crisis has caused multiple concerns and problems. Airports are closed so there are no visitors to purchase the crafts. Resort hotels have little business or are empty, so the gift shops do not order uniforms or new stock. Since the program has a lot of stock and no orders there is no income and no work to keep everyone employed.

The training program continues and is using up savings to provide a lunch and allowance to the trainees. Once the trainees are skilled they will be making 500 plus school uniforms for MCV. MCV purchases the fabric and the sewing program takes care of the production for free as their yearly contribution. (See photos)

One of the trainees was badly injured in a hit and run accident. He was taken to Beit Cure an international orthopedic hospital in Blantyre where they were able to save his leg. However, over two years, more than $15,000 was spent on his care. He was walking and had just returned to the program when everyone had to be sent home because of COVID19.
The project has its own building, lots of equipment and a large inventory. It will be a struggle to get back to the previous production, employment and income levels, but Nettie and Ayami are sure that somehow it will survive.
